Story

This is a wine with secrets to keep. The winery, Boekenhoutskloof, tantalises creates a tantalising curiosity by refraining to expose why they named the blend, The Chocolate Block. You will just have to try the wine to find out for yourself.

Tasting Notes

For a wine with such depth, complexity, and rich textures, pair it with the aria "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. The aria’s chocolaty timbre, full of passion and longing, mirrors the wine’s luxurious texture, especially the mouth-coating dark milk chocolate sensation. Sung by the character Cavaradossi, this aria embodies a deep, melancholic beauty, with its velvety, emotive phrasing and rich tones—much like the wine’s combination of boysenberry, dark cherry, and floral notes.

The aria’s powerful delivery and nuanced layers of emotion parallel the wine’s balance of fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and complex flavours of plum, black currant, and espresso. The subtle spice in the wine aligns beautifully with the depth of emotion in the aria, creating a pairing that is both deeply satisfying and evocative.

Food Pairing

Simply pair with 80% or above dark chocolate.

Wine Makers Note

Grapes are whole-berry fermented in a combination of concrete and stainless steel fermenters with no additions being made. After spontaneous fermentation, we transferred the juice to seasoned (95%) 225L French barrique and 5% (on Cabernet Sauvignon) in new 225L French Barrique. The élevage ranged between 12-14 months, depending on variety.
