Story
Pinotage, a uniquely South African grape, is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. The term “Bosstok” refers to the traditional bush-vine vineyards typical of Agter-Paarl, where vines grow close to the ground. These low-yielding vines produce small, concentrated grapes with intense, flavorful character.
Tasting Notes
Ruby-garnet with a hint of purple, this medium-bodied Pinotage shows aromas of mocha, plum, and coffee, with a palate of red berries, nutmeg, and vanilla. Plush and rounded, it maintains vibrant fruit alongside gentle oak. Paired with Verdi’s “Bella figlia dell’amore”, the wine’s layered spice and richness echo the aria’s sensuous, graceful interplay.
Winemaker’s Note
Dry-farmed bush-vines in Agter-Paarl’s Malmesbury Shale soils produced smaller berries and looser bunches, yielding red wines with vibrant fruit, dark colour, and well-managed tannins. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel with frequent pump-overs, with skins removed at 8° balling before completing alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in tank. A quarter of the wine was matured for 12 months in French and American oak (10% new), then fined and filtered before bottling.
Food Pairing
Pair with a rich lamb stew or hearty bean soup with a crusty slice of farm style bread and a thick layer of butter.
