Story
Vondeling’s Merlot vines flourish on south-west facing slopes of well-weathered granite and koffieklip shale in the foothills of the Paardeberg. Cooled by gentle breezes, the fruit ripens slowly, achieving vibrant flavour and balance. Each bunch is hand-picked at perfect ripeness under the winemaker’s careful eye — a patient craft that captures both elegance and generosity in every glass.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in colour, this Merlot reveals aromas of sleek cherries, subtle raspberry, and a delicate hint of black pepper. The palate mirrors the nose, supported by fine, rounded tannins and a smooth, graceful finish.
Its ideal musical pairing is Rossini’s “Largo al factotum” from The Barber of Seville — spirited and charming, full of rhythm and life, much like the wine’s exuberant red-fruit character.
Food Pairing
Perfect with a traditional South African braai or a classic Sunday roast. Equally delightful alongside grilled meats, rich sauces, or hearty vegetarian dishes.
Winemaker’s Note
The grapes are destemmed but left as whole berries for cool fermentation, ensuring bright fruit expression without heavy tannin extraction. Following fermentation, the wine matures in seasoned 300-litre French oak barrels, completing malolactic fermentation before blending and bottling. The result is a supple, fruit-driven Merlot of poise and depth.
